Shashka is kind of sabre, curved bladed slashing weapon. It is a straight sword with double edged effective for thrusting and slashing both. Militants wore this sword with cutting edge upward. Initially in the 19th century Russian troops adopted this sabre and later on Germany imported it. When cavalry was recognized, troops started using this Shashka .In the Second World War Shashka was used by Soviet.
Two styles of Shashka are; the Caucasian Shashka and the Cossack Shashka. Caucasian Shashka originated from Caucasus that is a state between Europe, Asia and Middle East. Cossack Shashka originated from Ukrainian Cossacks who are militants of Ukrainian that is European Country. Shashka comes from the word “Sashkoe” which literal meanings “Long Knife” that is a language of the people of northwest region of Caucasian.
This sword is of late middle age (after 13th century) when more specialized and variety swords and tools were discovered that could cut and thrust effectively.
The sabre blade was generally double or triple-fullered, and it is much wider than European Sabre and its unique styles of tempering, it was much stronger too, and notable for its sharpness and able to deal damage to light body armor.
Shashka that was valuable and have much importance in history is from Georgia, Caucasus in 19th century that is very old but very authentic tool. Handle is made from horn. Blade is made from high quality steel and nicely fullered from both sides. You can see famous Gurda marks on the blade.
If strike is much closer to the hilt it will be very easy to apply force on the blade which cause longer pulling. It need much force for pulling when hilt is slightly curved down. It is without guards as originally not found in Caucasian manufacturers but completely covered along with hilt in scabbard.
The shashka has the feel of a European sabre and was notable for its sharpness. One more point is that Cossack only know about sharpness of his Shashka that if it is fine to cut in half a light piece of thread gently falling down unto the edge of the blade.
Film footage of Tsar Nicholas II (1968–1918) using a Circassian sabre in an overhead twirling motion to horizontally cut pieces from a wooden pole are available today.

On the brass part of handle is monogram of the " Alexander`s III”. The blade is steel, one-edged, dated 1892, with monogram of " Alexander`s III" and with a crown and the brand of Russian empire "two-headed eagle”. The wooden scabbard covered with black leather and brass parts. Total length in scabbard is 37". Blade is 31".
Shashka features are very beautifully decorated with gold, silver, embedded gems and stones etc. These tools with specification are available today and mostly are very attractive and admirable for the people as classical art. These tools are used to be for decoration in Galleries where thousand of people and tourists come to visit.
